Record Store Day 5! April 21st! Calendar is marked!
17 ♥
While we are still 149-days away from Record Store Day 2012, the organizers of the event have poured there all in trying to lure you away from department stores and into your local independent record shops on Black Friday. Like most of you I shy away from shopping on the most awful of all unofficial holidays, and make it my goal to Christmas shop almost entirely online, but record shopping can trump all of those goals and lure me away from leftover turkey sandwiches to snag some of the goodies these guys are selling.
Having poured over the list of records being released for this event I’ve singled out three amazing additions to my collection that will be topping my shopping list next Friday, and I may just buy extras to start giving out as gifts as well…
The Beatles 7” Vinyl Box Set, featuring: “Ticket to Ride”/”Yes It Is”, “Hey Jude”/”Revolution”, “Something/”Come Together”, & “Yellow Submarine”/”Elanor Rigby” (10,000 copies US)
Nivrana Nevermind - The Singles, 10” Vinyl Box Set, featuring:  “Smells Like Teen Spirit”/”Drain You”/”Even in His Youth”/”Aneurysm”, “Come As You Are”/”Endless, Nameless”/”School (live)”/”Drain You (live)”, “Lithium”/”Been A Son (live)”/”Curmudgeon”/”D-7” (taken from a John Peel Session), “In Bloom”/”Silver (live)”/”Polly (live)” (5,000 copies US)
Pink Floyd The Wall, 7” Vinyl Box Set, featuring:  “Another Brick in the Wall”/”One of My Turns”, “Comfortably Numb”/”Hey You”, “Run Like Hell”/”Don’t Leave Me Now” (7,500 copies US)
So yeah, that’s what I’m looking forward to doing on my birthday - scrambling for three limited edition box sets from bands that have been long gone for ages. Oh, and there is one 7” from a contemporary musician I’m interested in as well…
Craig Finn  “Honolulu Blues”/”Rented Room” 7”, which is of course the first solo music to be officially release by Finn.

Record Store Day 2011: The Wishlist!
As you should know if you read websites like this one, tomorrow is the 4th annual Record Store Day! The annual celebration of our favorite brick-n-mortar shops has become a sort of “Chirstmas for hipster” celebration of everything wax and we love every minute of it. Last year I went positively ape-shit on the holiday, spending loads of $$$’s, scooping up an impressive haul of limited edition 7”s, and seeing bands like Cymbals Eat Guitars rocking in shops. While we don’t have the same sort of cash at hand for tomorrow’s event we still have a long wishlist of records we want to scoop up and the festivities alone should be enough to entice any music lover out of bed before noon!
Here’s my plan for the day tomorrow as well as my super long wishlist of RSD exclusives! My day will start over in New Jersey (eek, I know) at the legendary Vintage Vinyl. My reason for heading to the Garden State first is pretty simple - Vintage Vinyl opens earlier than the NY shops (8:30am) and shouldn’t be half as crazy as Brooklyn or Manhattans hordes will be (I hope). I probably won’t stay for the John Leguizamo in-store signing though.
From Jersey I will head to Brooklyn, hitting up Permanent Records, Sound Fix Records, Ear Wax Records, and the Academy Records Annex hoping to fill in any of the gaps I miss out over in Jersey. There’s also a couple of noteworthy performances going down in Brooklyn to celebrate Record Store Day…
- Eula will be performing a few sets at Permanent Records throughout the day! Make sure to check out at least one and pick up their brand new record!
- Damon & Naomi will be performing at Sound Fix Records at 7pm, another free in-store totally worth seeing!
- Later on Eula will also be celebrating their record release at Bruar Falls with some old school PTST favorites, Ghost Bunny, Shark?, & Pow Wow!
After my little Brooklyn adventure it will be off to the big city and Generation Records for the best in-store lineup of the entire collector holiday! Not only will they have DJ performance by all three members of Yo La Tengo (as well as one by WFMU’s Tom Scharpling!) they will also be hosting in-store performances by Spa Castles (1pm-1:20pm), I Hate Our Freedom (2:10pm - 2:40pm), The Jay Vons (3:30pm - 4:20pm), and Obits (5:10pm - 6pm)! Fucking sweet right! Also in NY, Regina Spektor will be performing at 7pm at Other Music which might be worth seeing as well.
(Note: To my Staten Island friends that don’t want to leave the island, Major’s Records is supposedly participating but I don’t know to what extent.)
And that my friends is one busy fucking day! Here’s what I’m hoping to grab as far as the actual Record Store Day releases go…
Wishlist: 13th Floor Elevators “Wait for My Love” 7”, Bad Brains “Pay to Cum” 7”, Big Star Third (Test Pressing Edition), Built to Spill “Ripple” 7”, Green Day/Hüsker Dü “I Don’t Want to Know if You’re Lonely” 7”, Mastodon/ZZ Top “Just Got Paid” 7”, Nirvana Hormoaning, Off! Live at Generation Records 7”, Red Hot Chili Pepers/The Ramones “Havana Affair” 7”, Sonic Youth Whore’s Moaning, The Beach Boys “Good Vibrations”/”Heroes & Villains” 10”, The Flaming Lips Heady Nuggs, Various Artists GBV Tribute: Sing for Your Meat, Wild Flag “Future Crimes”/”Glass Tambourine” 7”, Deerhunter “Memory Boy” 7”, Fucked Up Town Comp, New Pornographers “Moves” 7”, Polvo Celebrate the New Dark Age, Superchunk/Coliseum “Horror Business”/”Bullet” 7”, The White Stripes “Lafayette Blues”/”Sugar Never Tasted So Good” 7”, The White Stripes “Let’s Shake Hands”/”Look Me Over Closely” 7”, Various Artists Franz Ferdinand Covers EP
Final note: If there’s anyone reading this in the UK and wants to pick me up the Radiohead RSD exclusive I would gladly pay for it and the shipping to the States! Thanks!

Generation Records Record Store Day Lineup

Record Store Day 2010 is this Saturday, April 17th. For us, that means a million questions about what records we will be getting on that day and who will be playing at the store. Well, we don’t know what records we’re getting (they are allocated people!) but we have the finalized in-store lineup for the day.

The in-store lineup will feature Cymbals Eat Guitars, Black Wine, Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand) and The Budos Band. Andrew WK and other special guests will be in the house, spinning records and celebrating RSD with us.

[UPDATE - Obits will not be playing at the store on RSD.]
