Best Albums of 2010!!!
I know I went and started this list at the beginning of December and then vanished. It all fits with my lack of blogging lately and the fact that my internet presence has vanished to next to nothing. Well I still have opinions and still want to share them with all of you, and thanks to this wonderful snow day I will now list my Top 15 albums of the year for all of you. I hope it’s a little different from the hundreds of lists out there already and maybe there’s an album or two on here that you haven’t heard yet and will fall for because of it!
1. LCD Soundsystem This Is Happening; Seemed like the soundtrack to everything this year, from long walks around the neighborhood to long drives across the country. It’s pretty perfect!
2. The National High Violet; Started as a good record, slowly grew into a major crush, and now I wouldn’t want an album collection without it. Positively beautiful music.
3. Sleigh Bells Treats; No one pushed the envelope on music like this. This changed things, for the better, and will probably shape the sound of music for years.
4. Vampire Weekend Contra; So all that backlash from a few years ago was totally undeserved. These guys make the catchiest tunes this side of Katy Perry and we’re still not sick of them despite all the “Holiday” commercials.
5. Arcade Fire The Suburbs; Maybe it’s my 30-year old ears but everything about this record sounds right. It’s “Dad Rock” for almost Dad’s or the people that should be thinking about becoming Dad’s at this point.
6. No Age Everything In Between; One time I was so hammered for a No Age show that I puked right in the pit. It didn’t stop me from going nuts and this record makes me want to do it all over again.
7. Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy; At the beginning of the month this was #1, it’s dropped a bit and I’m starting to think I like 808’s more than this. Say wha?!?!? It’s still fucking amazing though.
8. Deerhunter Halcyon Digest; Starting to head down the Spoon road where they are so consistently good that people will underrate them just because of their history. Don’t know if this beats Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. but it comes close.
9. Titus Andronicus The Monitor; Fuck the Gaslight Anthem, real Jersey rock should sound like this! Who else could have written a pertinent record about the Civil War?
10. Les Vinyl Bright Gray; Local bands need love too and we’re here to give it to ‘em. You may not know these guys but their pop tunes and use of aliteration are too good to ignore.
11. Spoon Transference; If I had never heard of Spoon this record would be in my top 10. Because we compare it to everything that’s come before it drops down just a smidge. Not fair, but a history is hard to overcome and impossible to ignore.
12. The Walkmen Lisbon; They’ll never escape the shadow of “The Rat” but who cares when they keep cranking out records this good? It may even be my favorite Walkmen record yet.
13. The Morning Benders Big Echo; While most of California toiled in that chillwave shit The Morning Benders wrote a pop album that out paced all of the trendy stuff. There is no substitute for writing good songs.
14. Beach House Teen Dreams; We’ve been listening to this for over a year now and it still sounds as fresh and beautiful as it did the first time we heard it. That’s staying power and it’s a beautiful thing.
15. Dinosaur Feathers Fantasy Memorial; Bringing a tropical flavor to a Brooklyn venue near you all year long. Our boys from Brooklyn need a place on this list and probably should have had one on your list too!
