Must Listen: Campfires - “Amelia” & “By and By and Bye”
It took me a while to realize how much I enjoy Campfires’ music, partially because it’s released on cassettes and I don’t have a cassette player and partially because I can’t visit their Bandcamp page to listen every day (well I suppose I could, but there is other music out there and I also sometimes forget to visit Bandcamp pages even after I bookmark them). But thank goodness I did because this dreamy, lo-fi, bedroom pop is truly great and one of my new favorite listens of the year thus far. Give it a try…

Received word about a secret performance going down at Rockwood Music Hall this week featuring a long time Pop Tarts Suck Toasted favorite - Wakey! Wakey!. Apparently the band will be performing Wednesday Feb. 15th at 7pm even though the venue has it listed as Mike & Tan. I suppose that refers to lead singer/pianist Mike Grubbs and Tanya Buziak. Word on the street is the performance is supposed to be an industry showcase but there will be room in the 2nd room to hear the performance, and chances are Mike will hang around after the show to meet & greet fans and industry insiders alike.
In other Wakey! Wakey! news I know for a fact that Mike is hard at work at the new LP, and I’m hoping we’ll be hearing that towards the end of this year if not sooner.

Morning Listening: Sharon Van Etten Tramp
Today marks the official release of Sharon Van Etten’s wonderful new record Tramp. Of course if you’ve been paying attention there’s a good chance you already streamed the album courtesy of NPR. Still, there’s something to be said for listening to a record on the day its released, namely that communal feel you get thinking that other people are listening to the very same record as you. Maybe you feel a kinship with these people, maybe curiosity as to what they think a certain lyric means, or maybe you are both just losing yourselves in the beauty of the songs laid before you. Whatever the case may be release day listening still holds a special place in our hearts and that’s why we all should be listening to Tramps today.

We’re super excited to get our hands on our pre-ordered copy of Fucked Up’s “Year of the Tiger” next week, but until we do Matador has kindly posted a player with all of the band’s previous Zodiac singles! Definitely worth listening to for the next hour or two!

Morning Listening: The Best of the Monkees
Perfect Thursday music. Take that however you may. Seriously, I have no idea what it means at all.

Morning Listening: Ski Lodge Ski Lodge EP
Got to enjoy this four song, eponymous EP this morning along with my daily cup of coffee. Like my coffee, it helped to awaken my senses and prepare me for the day ahead. It also put a gentle little melody in my head for me to hum along with as I toil through the day. Hope it helps you get through your day as well!

<a href=”http://chainsoflove.bandcamp.com/album/singles” _mce_href=”http://chainsoflove.bandcamp.com/album/singles”>Singles by Chains Of Love</a>
These days I’m not reading nearly as many music blogs as I used to. It seems like more and more blogs are just regurgitating press releases and not really adding to the conversation. There are a few that I still frequent regularly, folks that discover new music long before it becomes a trending topic or even an twinkling in the Hype Machine’s eyes. Yours Truly is one of those sites and they recently turned me on to the gorgeous, and gorgeous sounding Chains of Love.
Listening to the four tunes they have over on their Bandcamp site you are immediately transported to a time I never lived in. A time of beehive hairdos and adorable poodle skirts, when ladies doowopped and boys crooned. Yeah, we’ve had this sort of sound hit the indie spectrum before (The Pipettes come to mind), but who cares about all that when the sounds are this affecting and this catchy.
Anyway, it’s been a while since I’ve written about anything other than Fucked Up and Community so hopefully you guys you will allow me to branch out slightly. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Now Listening: Warm Weather Dances EP
<a href=”http://warmweather.bandcamp.com/album/dances” _mce_href=”http://warmweather.bandcamp.com/album/dances”>dances by warm weather</a>
My iTunes always seems to get cluttered up with music that has a grand total of 0 listens. Every once in a while I comb through the jam packed library listening to these tunes and deleting at will if they don’t strike an immediate chord with me.
I’m sure most of you have similar songs taking up valuable megabytes of space on your hard drives, courtesy of the countless blogs and e-mails you get telling you to download this, listen to that. Of course there are only so many hours in the day, and we have favorite songs and albums to listen to, Turntable.fm rooms to impress our friends in, WFMU’s to listen to, and TV shows to watch.
Today I was going through my library listening at will to stuff that had never been played when I came across the band Warm Weather. Considering the perfect weather hovering over NYC right now it seemed like the perfect time to press play on their EP Dances. Sure enough the music has that tropical and joyous feel to every song, making it the perfect soundtrack to a perfect summer day.
Despite my best efforts it’s kind of hard not to compare these guys to other bands that frequently get played here at the Pop Tarts HQ. Bands like Dinosaur Feathers and Ruby Suns, maybe even a bit of Vampire Weekend, all of whom use tropical vibes to lull us into their songs. Most of the tunes a short and sweet, offering gentle, warm breezes of music to the ears.
It’s good stuff and definitely worth downloading and not neglecting for a few weeks! Seriously, their album is available for free at their Bandcamp page right now, go hit download and press play shortly after that! You won’t regret it.
(Props to My Old Kentucky Blog for posting about them about a month ago!)

Came across Wugazi for the first time yesterday courtesy of #turntablefm and I have to say, holy shit this is awesome stuff! Apparently there’s a full album worth of these coming on Tuesday and I have to say I’m stoked to hear the rest after hearing these two tunes! I think you will be too!
