While we are still 149-days away from Record Store Day 2012, the organizers of the event have poured there all in trying to lure you away from department stores and into your local independent record shops on Black Friday. Like most of you I shy away from shopping on the most awful of all unofficial holidays, and make it my goal to Christmas shop almost entirely online, but record shopping can trump all of those goals and lure me away from leftover turkey sandwiches to snag some of the goodies these guys are selling.
Having poured over the list of records being released for this event I’ve singled out three amazing additions to my collection that will be topping my shopping list next Friday, and I may just buy extras to start giving out as gifts as well…
The Beatles 7” Vinyl Box Set, featuring: “Ticket to Ride”/”Yes It Is”, “Hey Jude”/”Revolution”, “Something/”Come Together”, & “Yellow Submarine”/”Elanor Rigby” (10,000 copies US)
Nivrana Nevermind - The Singles, 10” Vinyl Box Set, featuring:  “Smells Like Teen Spirit”/”Drain You”/”Even in His Youth”/”Aneurysm”, “Come As You Are”/”Endless, Nameless”/”School (live)”/”Drain You (live)”, “Lithium”/”Been A Son (live)”/”Curmudgeon”/”D-7” (taken from a John Peel Session), “In Bloom”/”Silver (live)”/”Polly (live)” (5,000 copies US)
Pink Floyd The Wall, 7” Vinyl Box Set, featuring:  “Another Brick in the Wall”/”One of My Turns”, “Comfortably Numb”/”Hey You”, “Run Like Hell”/”Don’t Leave Me Now” (7,500 copies US)
So yeah, that’s what I’m looking forward to doing on my birthday - scrambling for three limited edition box sets from bands that have been long gone for ages. Oh, and there is one 7” from a contemporary musician I’m interested in as well…
Craig Finn  “Honolulu Blues”/”Rented Room” 7”, which is of course the first solo music to be officially release by Finn.

These days I’m not reading nearly as many music blogs as I used to. It seems like more and more blogs are just regurgitating press releases and not really adding to the conversation. There are a few that I still frequent regularly, folks that discover new music long before it becomes a trending topic or even an twinkling in the Hype Machine’s eyes. Yours Truly is one of those sites and they recently turned me on to the gorgeous, and gorgeous sounding Chains of Love.
Listening to the four tunes they have over on their Bandcamp site you are immediately transported to a time I never lived in. A time of beehive hairdos and adorable poodle skirts, when ladies doowopped and boys crooned. Yeah, we’ve had this sort of sound hit the indie spectrum before (The Pipettes come to mind), but who cares about all that when the sounds are this affecting and this catchy.
Anyway, it’s been a while since I’ve written about anything other than Fucked Up and Community so hopefully you guys you will allow me to branch out slightly. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Tuesday marked the release of Childish Gambino’s Camp, and I have really been digging Donald Glover’s work on this record so far. If you know anything about Glover (he’s an actor on Community, he’s a comedian, and he wanted to be Spider-man) you probably know what to expect from his album, deep lyrics, big beats, and lots of references to his dick. Well Camp follows through on all those expectations and then some, you should definitely check it out on Spotify (or whatever you use to stream music) and then buy it and then go see Childish Gambino and then stalk Donald Glover in real life.
Here’s a few lyrics that made me chuckle the first few times through Childish Gambino’s Camp:
“And you is a fake fuck, like a fleshlight” - “Firefly”
“Made the beat then murdered it, Casey Anthony” - “Bonfire”
“My dick hard like an accent mark, it’s all about the over E’s” - “Bonfire”
“I’m going straight for your thighs like the cake you ate” - “Heartbeats” (which is probably the best overall song on the record, that beat is amazing!)
“They real black like won’t show up on your camera phone” - “Backpacker”
“I guess meet me at Pianos/cross-fadin’ off of nanos/ugh on that hipster shit” - “L.E.S.”
“She got ironic tattoos on her back/that ain’t ironic bitch, I love Rugrats” - “L.E.S.”
“The only thing I put before me is do re” - “Kids”
“She got an ugly friend? Roll solo/Can I stay at your place? No hobo” - You See Me”
“Donald Glover, no relation/Always workin’, no vacation/They couldn’t feel me, no vocation” - “Sunrise”
